Howe Brook Walk at Baxter State Park
Howe Brook Walk at Baxter State Park
Sunday, August 25, 2024 (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (EDT)
Description
Join State of Maine senior geologist Lindsay Theis for a guided geology walk around South Branch Pond Campground. Anyone who has ever hiked Katahdin or visited the southern expanse of Baxter State Park may well be familiar with the way that glaciers carved out some of the Park's most iconic features, including jagged arêtes like the Knife Edge and Hamlin Ridge, amphitheater-like cirques such as the Great Basin, and immense glacial erratics such as the Kidney Stone. But glaciers were not the only forces that shaped Baxter State Park. In the north end, where granite gives way to rhyolite and the Traveler dominates the horizon, evidence of the landscape's volcanic history becomes apparent. If your plans include visiting or camping at South Branch Pond between August 24th and 25th and you're interested in learning more about the ways volcanism and running water have created some of the most interesting and notable features in Baxter, join us and state of Maine senior geologist Lindsay Theis for a couple of guided geology walks! Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.
